A sculpture is a three dementional art object. If the stuff around the sculpture is part of the art...then it is an installation.
Installations may include anything from the wind to passing people as 'part of the art piece.'
Shame
Ripped plywood, glue, driftwood, wire, ashes and iron bowl. 1998.
This sculpture consisted of four lifesized figures radiating out from the central bowl, which is filled with ash. The figures cover their faces in shame.

Industrial Eclipse
A wood palet, industrial chain, chunks of asphalt (from the street) and a variety of colored glass.
This piece was made to coordinate in time with an actual eclipse 1999. During the eclipse it was shown at the San Francisco Art Institute.

One Moment of Memory
This installation was made with rope, ice, 4-inch industrial bolts, an alarm clock and numbers. These merged with the existing archetecture and time. 1999.
The ropes were attached to the archetecture in the form of giant infinity symbols. I studied a book on how spiders weave their web, and used the same process to weave mine.
The center held a block of ice. This ice was the moment of memory.
Inside the ice was a frozen alarm clock, this was my referance. A mark on a map of the place we had been.
The ice was held aloft by bolts frozen into the block, which the ropes were tied to.
As I wove the web, I worked out from the center. The center was zero (a point in time).
I checked my watch as I wove outwards. I put the time at each crossing of the ropes (on little stickers.)
The piece existed for 26 minutes before it changed form.
Sometimes I can breath
This installation was made from painting canvas, video tape and two large stones (barely visable, but circled in red.)
This area is mostly used to show paintings. The area is often windy. The wind would hit the video strands and they would explode to life. The piece interacted with the other paintings and with passing peolpe.
The video tape was attached to a painting canvas, which was attached to the wall. The painting canvas was cut into a half circle. This same shape was also projected through the existing archetecture by the moving sun.
All day and night it would move with the two stones anchoring it.

Wish Machine
The wish machine bosted a computer keyboard on which people were invited to type in their wish. Fall of 2000.
Dinosaur Bait
A single mother of two children owns seventy acres of virgin rain forest in Oregon. The property was willed to her by her grandfather. The front three acres are 'Prehistoric Park.' Thirty life size concrete dinosaurs can be seen by any passing tourist willing to pay the five dollar admission. The dinosaurs were sculpted by her grandfather in the 30's. The only one visible from the highway is a Tyrannosaurus Rex. It is meant as a sort of bait to attract the passing tourists.
But because it was last painted in 1931, it was looking pretty dull. The cracked and faded Barney was not attracting the tourists the way it used to. The lack of income had forced the mother to consider the offers from the timber companies.
With the aid of my friend Jeff Hill, I renovated the T-Rex. Sanded it, filled cracks and repainted it. We did this for free.
Throughout this project, I maintained that I was from the I.D.C. (Institute of Dinosaur Cosmatalogy.) I had I.D.C. buisness cards, a t-shirt and I signed all documents, "I.D.C."
During the three days that I painted on the T-Rex, I found myself talking to the old man who had sculpted it. I felt that I was collaborating with him. A collaboration with a ghost. I would ask him a question and the plastic tarp would move in wind. I would read into it as my answer.
As I worked, I came to realize that an entire echo-system lived within the hollow dinosaur. A swarm of hornets sometimes occured in its mouth area, not unlike a fire breathing dragon. Several times, small bats would crawl squeeking out. There was a skunk too. Bad breath.
This is a piece of functional art. It is not on a pedestal in a gallery.
It is next to the highway, upholding an ecosystem that includes a small family.
